January Market Info

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I just returned from the Atlanta Market, and they don’t call it Hotlanta for nothing.  Not in temperature (it was extremely cold), but trend wise.  Saw all kinds of new stuff and bought lots.  It is always so fun to see everything looking perky and new.

One of my favorite new looks is also the big trend of  Bohemian Mix:  very casual and very bright.  Fun light fixtures mixed with great multi-colored patterns for textiles.  I bought some beautiful pillows to throw on your beds and chairs and wonderful scarfs for your tables.  Speaking of scarves, I had to talk sternly to myself to stop buying them when I realized how many I had purchased.  Scarves and shawls are wonderful this year….throw them on your table for an accent or wear them…it’s all fun.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Industrial Vintage Chic.  It all about the mix of metal and wood and aged pieces.  They don’t even have to be old.  At Market, it is shown with mostly neutral colors like cream, beige, grey, and brown, but I loved it when there was some color with it.  This is an update of the Cottage Chic or Shabby Chic we have been seeing.  It is also a little bit more adaptable to Texas living.  Mixes great with Traditional, Texas Hill Country and Tuscan.  I bought some fabulous tables and wooden panels with images applied and then scuffed up.  A couple of my favorite boards are already in:  they look like old doors that someone used as a canvas for their art work.

Anybody remember what a collage is?  It’s back, but of course it’s not like the old days.  It’s not as shiny, but much more subtle, sometimes half erased.  Images on canvases, boxes, plaque, and pillows.  We have in great collage boxes and canvases already.

Come check it all out, because the best part is you can mix it with what you already have.  And hey, who doesn’t need a new scarf?

Birds Birds Birds

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

“What’s the deal with all the birds?”  people ask.  Birds are the new accessory.  No not your Mother’s ceramic bird figurines;  but everything from wooden birds on a pedestal to print with a collage of birds against vintage script.   Maybe it’s the spirit of green or the get back to nature thought, but it is adaptable and great fun.  Take an inexpensive bird, sit it on a nest and cover it with a glass dome, and you have a wonderful piece for a side table or entry hall.  There is a vast array of sizes and colors; and since it is nature,  you can’t go wrong.

Think about lamps that have birds painted on them and even lamps that have a bird cage as the base.  I even have a fantastic chandelier that is a bird cage with muticolored birds perching all over it. There are some lovely birds on fabrics.  And for the traditional folk, I have some fabulous roosters and quail.  Do you like blue?  How about blue clocks?  Want to get organized?  Beautiful file folders with bird images just feel better that manilla.

Spring is coming and with it lightness and color.  Birds are an easy way to feel like Spring all year round.
